Our CEO talks 2016 and granting more One True Wishes in 2017

Jason Suckley, CEO of Make-A-Wish UK

Our purpose is simple. We grant magical wishes to enrich the lives of children and young people fighting life-threatening conditions. In the 30 years since we began in the UK, over 10,000 children have had their one true wish made a reality.

In 2016, more than 2,000 seriously ill children turned to us, more than ever before. We granted 984 wishes, another record, and 130 more than in 2015. Wishes granted last year varied from turning 7 year old Felix, who's living with a blood disorder, into a brand new superhero - Electroman. Training 6 year old Oliver, who's fighting an undiagnosed genetic condition, to be a Jedi and fight Darth Maul. And even transforming 6 year old Chloe, who's living with a heart condition, into a mermaid!

However, with such an increase in demand, also came the hard decision to pause certain wish types to enable us to afford to grant the wishes of all children turning to us.

We never want to have to turn a desperately ill child away because we can’t afford to grant their wish – every eligible child deserves to experience the magic, hope and strength a wish brings – and that’s where your support can really make a huge difference.

The children we work with are often enduring things most of us could never imagine. They’re going through gruelling treatment, endless medical appointments and spending time in hospital away from their home, friends and family. A far cry from the childhood they should be enjoying.

Granting their One True Wish provides seriously ill children with hope for the future, strength to cope and resilience to fight their condition. They’re given quality time away from the daily realities of living with their condition and given the chance to make magical memories they can treasure forever – whatever their future may hold. If it was my child or yours, we would want nothing less.

To put it simply, wishes change lives. You can help make these wishes happen by supporting us this year, because, now, more than ever, we really need your help.
