Five year old Nikkita from Canterbury, who’s been fighting a Wilms’ Tumour, had an unusual wish: she wanted to fly like Peter Pan! Now, where to start…?
We found that there was a Peter Pan pantomime production at Bromley’s Churchill Theatre, and arranged for Nikkita and her family to attend the matinee show, arriving early so that Nikkita could fulfil her wish pre-show.
After being rigged up to a practice swing for some rehearsal, she was joined on stage by Tinkerbell (CBBC presenter Gemma Hunt), who gave Nikkita her very own Tinkerbell costume to fly in. The it was time for Nikkita to show off her new skills, as she took to the skies with Wendy and Peter Pan (Jennifer Ellison), whilst the rest of the cast filled the stage to sing.
We need your help to grant another child's wish.
Nikkita has been through a lot since her diagnosis, enduring the removal of her right kidney along with the tumour before starting a four week course of radiotherapy and a 36 week course of chemotherapy. During her treatment, she needed blood transfusions and platelet therapy, picked up numerous infections and contracted E. Coli, which resulted in her being hospitalised for a month. She’s now in remission but will continue to have regular check-ups.
Dad Nick said: “The cast and staff at the Churchill Theatre were all wonderfully attentive and made Nikkita feel very special. Thank you for giving Nikkita a memory that will shine above the memories of her long treatment.”
