Wish stories

Lassyhani's wish...

“I wish to have art lessons”

9 years old, Newham

Acute and chronic leukaemia (with chemotherapy)

The number of children in the UK who could benefit from a wish has doubled in the last 15 years, and is set to increase further.

You can help more children like Lassyhani by donating now.

For nine-year-old Lassyhani, drawing has provided a creative escape when dealing with the emotional and physical repercussions of life with leukaemia. When Lassyhani got to delve into the world of art during six art lessons uniquely designed for her as part of her wish, she was in her element. As mum Nalini shared, “Her journey has been long and incredibly difficult, and this wish has brought her so much joy, hope, and purpose.”

Lassyhani's story

Nalini shared a bit about Lassyhani’s journey, explaining the link between art and a cancer diagnosis:

“Lassyhani has always loved to draw. She’s a quiet child. Shy at first, not very talkative when meeting new people, once she feels comfortable, her warmth and creativity shine through. From a young age, she dreamed of becoming a fashion designer. During the lockdown, this passion grew stronger as she spent her time drawing, painting, and learning through online YouTube tutorials.

"In July 2021, Lassyhani was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). Her treatment lasted until December 2023. It was an incredibly painful and exhausting journey, both emotionally and physically, for the both of us. We spent long stretches in hospital, including Christmas and Easter, and were often in isolation due to infection control.

"During these isolating and difficult times, the hospital’s play team and supporting charities made the biggest difference, offering art and craft activities that lifted our spirits. Art became our escape, especially for Lassyhani.”

Lassyhani's wish

June 2025

When a nurse from Appleby Health Centre referred Lassyhani for a wish, Lassyhani and her mum initially thought that a holiday would provide the ideal break:

“When it came time to choose her wish, her first thought was a simple seaside holiday. She hadn’t been on a break since 2019. But after giving it more thought, she said she wanted something more lasting, something that would help her grow and carry into her future.

"What she truly wished for was to learn how to draw and paint properly.

"She has always dreamed of selling her artwork, not for herself, but to raise money for children and mothers going through what we experienced. Even at her young age, she has a giving heart. She once said to me in the most innocent way: ‘I will draw and sell my artwork. You can use the money to help other children, and I can keep a little to buy more materials.”

When Lassyhani learnt that she would be getting the art lessons she desired, she was beaming with joy. Her wish would see her experience six one-hour art lessons all focused on different styles and techniques of painting and drawing.

Mum shared a bit about her most recent art session:

“Her most recent art session on July 2nd was a truly special moment. She completed a beautiful oil pastel painting of a flower with her mentor, Fiona.

"After the session, she turned to me and asked, ‘Mum, do you think someone would buy this painting?’ It was such a touching and hopeful question, one that reminded me just how far she’s come."

Lassyhani and her art teacher are stood together facing the camera. Between them, they're proudly holding Lassyhani's latest oil painting. A vibrant display of purple and various shades of green.
